A culture of Student Empowerment
The Leader in Me is an innovative, school wide process that emphasizes a culture of student empowerment and helps unleash each child’s full potential. Applying The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People®, teachers and students internalize timeless leadership principles that nurture the skills students need for success in the 21st century.
The process helps to create a culture of student empowerment based on the paradigm that every child can be a leader. This process is implemented in more than 3,915 schools, being St. Mary’s the first The Leader in Me and Lighthouse bilingual school in the Dominican Republic.
The 7 Habits are a synthesis of universal, timeless principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration and renewal, which are secular in nature and common to all people and cultures.

- St. Mary's School is a place of opportunity -
We believe in inspiring greatness one child at a time
All schools should be filled with students who are responsible, who show initiative, who are creative, who know how to set goals and meet them, who get along with people of various backgrounds and cultures, and who can resolve conflicts and solve problems.
We need to provide our students with the skills and abilities that will help them succeed in the 21st century. We believe in inspiring greatness one child at the time.
Our bilingual school not only focuses on the academics, but also provides opportunities for students to develop their full potential. Every day, all of our students are told that they are important, that their voice matters, and that they are capable and talented. St. Mary’s is a place where students are given opportunities to use their strengths and talents.
“We only get one chance to prepare children for a world none of us can possibly predict, what are we going to do with that one chance?”
Principal Muriel Summers, A.B. Combs Elementary
- The Leader in Me content and concepts -
We teach the skills necessary for success
The Leader in Me is aligned with best-in-class content and concepts practiced by global education leaders. It provides a logical, sequential, and balanced process to proactively enhance our school’s culture. The Leader in Me is also aligned to our bilingual school’s curriculum. The process teaches students the skills needed for academic success in any setting. These skills include critical thinking, goal setting, listening and speaking, self-directed learning, presentation-making, and the ability to work in groups.
The Leader in Me is an ubiquitous leadership approach — meaning everywhere and all the time. Our teachers use an integrated approach and make leadership training part of everything they do. So the model impacts everything — the traditions, events, organization, culture, instructional methodologies, and curriculum of our School.
